Strid Wood is a Caravan Club site near Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire.
We visited three times together, in November 2009, and July and October 2010. Since Allison died, I've visited once on my own, in November 2011.
![]() Very much our favourite site on the Caravan Club network. It's small by CC standards, with only 57 pitches, all of which hardstanding with EHU. The site is located in the Bolton Abbey estate, in a forest setting : the downside of this is that satellite coverage can be hit & miss (it is possible if you choose your pitch carefully). Being out in the wilds, mobile coverage is pretty absent too.
But that's the beauty of this place. You can walk out of the site, straight into the woodland and paths along the River Wharfe. So long as you have your waterproofs, the weather doesn't matter either : The Strid, lying below the site, is at its most spectacular when there's been heavy rain.
For essentials, papers etc, Bolton Abbey village is a couple of miles away : I can vouch if you do that on a cycle, you'll need plenty of puff. Otherwise, a trip to Skipton is in order, where there's an excellent market.
Would I go back? Of course.
