Cannock Chase is a Camping & Caravan Club site near Rugeley, Staffs.
I've visited once, in May 2012.
This is a wonderful site. It's nestled in the forests of Cannock Chase, south of Rugeley. Being a C&CC site, it's a mixture of hardstandings and grass, with or without electricity. I had what's probably the best pitch, opposite reception overlooking the rest of the site. Reception itself (pictured right) has a nordic feel about it, being a wooden lodge. The site management team were exceptionally friendly, living up to "the friendly club" marketing strapline. The showerblock (pictured left) does the job, and again is housed in a wooden building. The facilities are perhaps a little dated - there's something about a showertray inset into the floor rather than the more modern wetroom design - but perfectly functional and clean. Showers are of the fixed-head variety, but at least adjustable for temperature and not of the dreaded pushbutton variety. Note that mobile coverage was dodgy. Vodafone seemed about the best. There's a bit of traffic noise from the adjacent road, but nothing too bad (I noticed it more on a weekday than at weekend). There's an adjacent smallholding that has geese and I think (by the sound of it) a peacock...definitely noisy. The nearest supermarkets are Rugeley (down a 1:10 hill, not a fun return if you're on a bike); turn right out of the site and there's a mini-mart about a mile and a half down the hill. At one side of the site is a gate marked "dog walk". Somebody's obviously got a sense of humour - it leads into 26 square miles of forest. So undoubtedly it's the best dogwalk there is; similar to fellow C&CC site Delamere Forest, but unlike there, the paths from the site don't look like they'd turn into a quagmire at the first drop of rain. Rudy and Bonnie approve! Would we go back? Definitely.
